Did you know that if you have a website, anyone can look up your phone number and street address? Scary, right? Well in the video below, I show you how to protect yourself from stalkers and spammers. I explain what domain privacy is, and why you need it.
It’s really easy to do a WHOIS lookup to bring up the details of a website owner. Any stalker or competitor can find your name, email address, phone number and street address. Watch the video to see how it’s done and how you can prevent it being done to you. But if you’d rather skim text, then read on.
When you create a website, you need to register a domain name. It’s your address on the internet. Once you register that domain name though, anyone can look up the owner of the domain name. They’ll see your name, email address, phone number and street address. Look at how easy it is to do a WHOIS lookup.
Just type whois.domaintools.com/ and the domain name you want to look up. If you’ve got a shop, then you want people to know your address and phone number. But not everyone who creates a website has a shop. You could be a musician, a political activist or running a business from home. You don’t want crazy fans or haters come knocking on your front door.
So what can you do? Well apart from moving to the countryside, you could get a post office box, but PO Boxes cost $100-200 a year. Or you could get domain privacy.
Most web hosting companies charge you for it. It’s about $10-20 a year. Would you pay $10 a year to keep one stalker away? You betcha! Well, what if I told you that you can get it for free with DreamHost? Even better, I hear you say!
Let’s see it in action.
Firstly, go to https://buildanysite.com/?50-dollars-off-hosting. That’ll take you to the DreamHost site. After the $50 discount, you’ll only pay $5.78 a month for the web hosting in the first year which is a 40% saving off their standard price. Apart from the domain name being free for the first year, you get FREE domain privacy every year. So you’re saving about another $26 in the first year.
There’s a brief explanation of how Domain Privacy will replace your name and contact info in a WHOIS lookup with a DreamHost company called Proxy Protection. Click Continue.
Click the 1 year option here which means that it’ll be just $69.40 for a year’s web hosting, domain name and domain privacy.
Now when you view the detailed registrant info in a WHOIS lookup, instead of showing the contact details you put in when you signed up, it shows the details for DreamHost. Your home address and phone number are safe from stalkers and scammers. And your email address isn’t revealed either, so you’re also safe from spammers. If anyone has a valid reason to contact the site owner, they can just click this email address, and the email will be read by DreamHost and then forwarded to you if it’s not spam.
So that’s Domain Privacy in action. No set up required, and it comes free with your free domain from DreamHost when you sign up for hosting with them.
